The National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (NLS), The Library of Congress, produces full-length audio books and magazines. The scope of the collection is similar to that of a public library; it contains bestsellers, biographies, classics, mysteries, romances, westerns, poetry, histories and how-to books. There are a limited number of titles in Spanish and other languages for readers whose primary language is not English. Catalogs and bibliographies in a variety of formats are available for book and magazine selection for patrons.
Print/Braille books have the same text in print and Braille on pages facing each other. Print/Braille books enable blind and sighted readers to share the experience of reading a book together. Selected titles are available for pre-school through Grade 6 levels.
Digital Talking Books
Talking books currently produced by NLS are available on digital cartridge. These cartridges, approximately the same size as an audiocassette, hold an entire book. Digital talking books are used with a lightweight, portable, and durable player designed to enhance the reading experience.
Braille and Audio Reading Downloads (BARD)
Listen to books instantly! The entire talking book collection is available for instant download on BARD. BARD is the best way to guarantee immediate service without waiting on books in transit through the USPS mail. Hesitant to try it? Don’t be! The library is here to answer all your BARD questions.
Patrons can download the BARD Mobile app for iOS, and Android and use their smartphone, tablet, or Kindle Fire to listen to books. Additionally, audio books and magazines can be downloaded and loaded onto a flash drive and then played on the NLS provided digital talking book player. Braille materials can be downloaded for use with a refreshable Braille display.
All talking book patrons are eligible for this service. To sign up, call the library and ask for an instructional BARD email, or click HERE to access the BARD website.
